FixTunes

If you have more than a few MP3s on your computer, you know what we're talking about. Missing album names. Misspelled titles. Ten different spellings for the same artist. Browsing is not a pretty experience.

You need FixTunes. FixTunes will scan your music files and download the correct artist, album, title, track numbers, release year, genre and even album cover art. No hours spent typing or looking up album names, FixTunes will clean up your MP3 files automatically. And it doesn't just work for popular music, either. FixTunes utilizes a database of over 56,000 artists, over 188,000 albums and over 3 million tracks! Everything from pop, rock, classical and obscure jazz. If the song is from a commercially available CD, chances are its in the database. Other programs claim to help you rename files but still make you type in all the information. FixTunes is automatic - no typing!

Feedback from another list.

What I've been using the past year is MediaMonkey...
http://www.mediamonkey.com/

Simple interface much like Windows Explorer, gives ability to sync to MP3 players. Quickly look up tracks/albums on Amazon and Auto-tag, not quite as automated as Fixtunes... but you actually see what it's choosing, and if it picks the wrong album... you just hit the drop down and see if the correct one is available to choose. Then to boot, it's a far superior media player than iTunes or Windows Media Player. You can quickly sort/play by Genre, Artist, Album, Years, etc.

Going through my multitude of music this method however took me about 2 weeks, a little at a time. But in the end... I have a pristine clean MP3 collection.

If you have a small collection, and not much time... the Fixtunes should suite most folks just fine though.
