Voice Over the Internet Provider (VOIP) Skype has just announced free long distance phone calls in the US and Canada. I have been using Skype for my long distance calls for the last 3 or 4 months.
Requires a headset and microphone if you are calling thru your computer or one of the new Skype phones that plug directly into your DSL line.(and/or I suppose cable box). High speed Internet access may also be required.

Note that this offer currently ends as of 12/31/2006.
And this from another blog:
Any way, if you want to marry you low cost phone plans from your Bell operating company, the better option is TelEvolution’s PhoneGnome, a small gizmo that meshes your VoIP, SIP, Skype and your regular phone line, always picking the lowest cost (or free) option to route the calls. Their new product, GnomeLink allows PhoneGnome users to call Skype users from their PhoneGnome-enabled home phone, and to answer Skype calls on their PhoneGnome-enabled home phone.

You can call from a VIOP to a land line and visa versa. You can also have a local area code number that is directed to a VOIP account.
