Photosynth - A new type of photo program

Certainly not your average digital photo program. I will be trying this when it is released.

Photosynth takes a large collection of photos of a place or object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed 3-Dimensional space. With Photosynth you can:
walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle;
seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph even if it's gigapixels in size;
see where pictures were taken in relation to one another;
find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing;
explore a custom tour or see where you’ve been; or
send a collection to a friend.

On line backup

There are beginning to be a number of sites that let you back up your files to their servers - for free.

Mozy just announced their program. 2 Gigabytes. Beta test.
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/1537

I hear rumors of similar services about once a week.

With some finagaling you can do it using your Google Gmail account. 2.6 Gigabytes.
And maybe Yahoo and MSN mail for also. Haven't looked to these.

Google Talk - new version

Latest version of Google Talk (which almost no one uses). Neatest feature is that it allows you to send humongus files (any type). Also has voice mail.

Windows Live Messenger

This is the latest version of Microsoft's instant messenger program. I am trying it. My alias is Toyman or maybe Toy Man or use my email address thepcman@digital-rivers.com.

What I don't like about it is that I cannot import my Outlook Contacts.

Call your friends' mobile or landline phones. It's affordable both within the US and internationally. And calling someone's PC is always free.

Show and tell: Grab a webcam and start a video conversation within minutes.

Set up a Sharing Folder with a friend. Drop in photos and other stuff, as many as your computer can handle. See it even when one of you is offline.

With Windows Live Messenger, you can now connect with your Yahoo! Messenger with Voice contacts.

ShopWiki

Interesting concept. Not sure if it will fly.

ShopWiki is a shopping search engine that indexes retail products from thousands of online merchants. ShopWiki is not a store and does not sell anything. The purpose of the site is to help consumers find the products they are looking for online with ease.

Finding research papers on the web

From the Cool Tools blog:

I have constant need for scientific papers, and articles from obscure scholarly journals, or old newspaper clippings. A few years ago I would have trekked to the nearest university library whenever I required a journal article, to search through the stacks of bound volumes, haul them to the copy room and then xerox my findings. Now I stay at my desk and search through JSTOR, an online depository of the full text of most major scholarly and scientific journals, and download a PDF file of the same paper within minutes. Few academic books are available this way so far, but a surprising amount of the periodic portion of the digital library is now online.
